A Little Norwell History

It was 1634 when Norwell was first settled. It was part of the settlement of Satuit, which at the time encompassed Norwell and Satuit. Today, Satuit is known as Scituate.

When Norwell was first created in 1849, it was known as South Scituate. The name change didn’t occur until 1888. That is when ballots were cast, and the town of Norwell was born. It was named after Henry Norwell, a dry goods merchant who provided financial assistance to ensure the town roads were properly maintained.
