A Little Scituate History

The name Scituate is derived from the word satuit, a Wampanoag term that means cold brook. Scituate was incorporated in 1636. Over the years parts of the town were broken off to form other towns such as Hanover, Marshfield, and Norwell. However, since 1849, the town’s borders have remained the same. Back then, fishing and sea mossing was a huge part of the local economy.

Unlike other towns in the South Shore, Scituate is not contiguous. There are some parts that can only be reached via other towns. This is because in 1898, the mouth of the South River shifted northward, and the connection between Humarock and Scituate was lost. That’s why today, even though Humarock is technically a part of Scituate, it can only be reached through Marshfield.
